![]() ![]() You play as either Bill "Mad Dog" Rizer or Lance "scorpion" Bean, who are sent on a mission in an unnamed South American Island to neutralize the terrorist group known as Red Falcon who is trying to take over the world. What is the reason why it's critically lauded and fondly remembered over some other underrated gems? It's success is still being felt today, with references everywhere, most recent in the comedy "30 Minutes or Less." But, what makes this game so great? Surely, there has to be a reason other than, It's fun. The real success this game got was when it was ported to the NES. Released on Februin the arcades, Contra was a minor success in the arcades. There is no Hyper Shell item in this version of the game, so the fight against Magnus may take a bit longer and the player will have to make some careful maneuvering to avoid the tank's shots. Rotating Turrets shoot much slower bullets, so they are not as lethal as the ones in the arcade. ![]() Unlike the arcade version, there are no enemy soldiers shooting at the player beyond the gate, allowing them to safely get across and engage the boss. Also, instead of two Tucker vehicles as in the arcade version, there are three of them, although they remain stationary. Ledders in this stage are red, capable of moving, and will shoot at the player but Greeders, colored as green, although armed rarely will ever use their guns against the player (if at all). In this version of Stage 2, there are Greeders and Ledders. The player must be careful as they will shoot at them and their shots are obscured by the roof of the gate, which is presented as a foreground, luring unsuspecting players to walk straight into enemy bullets. Right before reaching Magnus, there is a gate with three sentry soldiers who remain stationary. However, if the player loses a life, the Hyper Shell will be lost, so if left with no other option it might as well be used to escape from tight situations. Due to its power, a Hyper Shell is recommended to be saved to destroy Magnus, the boss of this stage. There is a special weapon called the Hyper Shell which is capable of annihilating all onscreen enemies at a single launching. In this stage, all enemy soldiers are armed and are capable of shooting down the player. Shots strafed from Rotating Turrets are much faster than in the NES version, making them more lethal enemies. The player must break through the opposing enemy lines, cross a bridge near the end and destroy the main stronghold's gates to reach the stage's boss, Magnus. As expected from one of such places, large troops of enemies will appear from every possible direction and diverse types of very durable artillery vehicles and turrets will be encountered along the way. A level played from a top-view perspective inside an abandoned military base now occupied by Red Falcon's brainwashed human troops, as well as military machines that have fallen under the enemy's influence. ![]()
